While canned and dry beans last a long while at room temperature, the expiration date changes once they are cooked and opened.  But how long do black beans last in the fridge?

Canned, Dried, or Cooked? Types of Black Beans and Their Shelf Lives

A term we use in the food industry is called shelf life – which basically beans how long will the food last under certain conditions.

  • Black beans come in two main types: dried beans and canned beans. Both types have an incredibly long shelf life – unless they are cooked!
  • Dried beans, stored in a dry place with optimal storage conditions, can have a long shelf life of up to a few years. Dried beans are not yet cooked and have a much longer cooking time. 
  • Canned beans, depending on the integrity of the can, can also last years on their own when unopened. Canned beans are cooked under high pressure, but since they are sealed in a can, they have a very long shelf life at room temperature. 

However, an open can of beans lasts a shorter time. It's best to eat your leftovers within 3-5 days of making them. If you're not going to be able to finish them within a couple of days, throw them in your freezer to avoid food waste

How to Optimally Store Black Beans in the Fridge

Proper storage of your black beans means maintaining their quality and nutritional value. To make sure your black beans have the best quality, the best way to store them in airtight and sealed containers for cooked beans to prevent exposure to air and moisture. This minimizes the risk of spoilage and preserves their nutritional value. Make sure your refrigerator is set to <40 degrees to ensure the are correctly stored and out of the danger zone (40F – 140F)!

Make Your Cooked Black Beans Last Longer

If you have a big batch of black beans, freezing them is an excellent way to extend their usability. Transfer them to heavy-duty freezer bags and label them with the date for later use. This not only saves you time but also helps reduce food waste. Your black beans last a couple of days in the fridge. But be sure to eat your frozen beans within 3-6 months of freezing to preserve the best texture.

Signs of Spoilage to Watch For

Knowing when your beans have gone bad is crucial. Look out for an off odor, slimy texture, or discoloration. Mold growth is an obvious sign of Consuming spoiled beans can result in food poisoning caused by bacteria like E. coli. When in doubt, discard them.

Reheating black beans should be done over medium high heat or to 140F to ensure they’re thoroughly and safely warmed. Adding acidic ingredients like lime juice or lemon juice during the cooking process can also enhance their flavor.
